On a warm spring night, the sleepy north

woods town of Oakwood experiences the world-altering effects of an unusually brilliant aurora borealis. Multitudes of people disappear in what appears to be a religious rapture. At the same time, the technology of the world is plunged from the modern era to pre-industrial times. As the remnants struggle to understand what has happened, they must also scramble to survive. Does this lead to a dystopia (a place where life is difficult because of deprivation or oppression or terror), a utopia (a place or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens), or something else?
